About Me

Hi all, and welcome to The Comer Experience. Howdy, we are John and Gena. Gena is born and raised in Southern Oklahoma. John is a military brat, raised in New York for his first few years. He spent 5 years in Okinawa, Japan before moving to Oklahoma. Both of us have been married before, and have finally found our comfort in each other since 1999. We got married on July 4, 2006, and it makes Independence Day something much better to celebrate. We have hit a point in our life together that now we want to share our experiences with everyone. We want to take you on a trip through the everyday lives of our family. We have started this blog to give people a look into what our family enjoys, and goes through. You will see some great cooking from John, who learned from helping his mother in the kitchen. With his mix of Italian and Irish background he enjoys experimenting and making great food. We will also take you on our journey into learning photography and we would love to hear your critiques on our pictures. All and all we hope you enjoy your journey with us and can laugh and learn from our experiences. Enjoy and lots of fun, John & Gena #TheComerExperience

Investigating the Hottie & Undercover with the Hottie by Juli Alexander---Book Review

I stumbled upon this author through Book Bub those of you who have kindles should try this email program out.

Juli Alexanders writing technique is pretty dang good.  I would try and put the book down, and it would keep whispering to me to read more.  Such a dilemma.

The story is based on Amanda a shy but cute girl who goes to visit her aunt Christie whom she finds out is a spy.  The author brought a lot of adventure, drama, and crazy antics into these books.  Yes even see some romance, and flirting.  Amanda will find out "Investigating the Hottie" brings her closer to him than she ever expected.

The second book in the "Investigating" series you see just how far Amanda and the Hottie have made it, and lord help me the action in this book is pretty dang insane.  I really loved the way the characters were placed in pretty sticky situations. It's been really fun reading for sure.

I would say the series would even make a pretty decent TV series if that says anything. She's got a great series on her hands.  I personally can't wait until Nov/Dec for the next book to release.

It's perfect for young adult, older teens, and those of us in the middle age group..... :( yes I said middle age.

Liar "Scarab Beetle Series" by C.L.Stone Book Review

I know I am a little late getting this book review up.  Between work & home its been a busy summer.  What can I say!

I will have to say that I adore C.L. Stone, and I love both her book series.  This book is action packed, and lord help me I fall in love with the guys.  There is one steamy part in this book I will not ruin it you HAVE TO READ IT FOR YOURSELF.  :)  I love that C.L. Stone can just draw you into a book, and let your imagination take you on a joyride.  She did bring back the bad guy from the first book.  Or is he really a bad guy?  You'll just have to see for yourself.  The guys in this book are totally swoon worthy!  Who am I kidding though the guys from "Ghost Bird" are equally dreamy.  This author has totally got me strung up on both series.  I can't help it.

So in conclusion--hot guys, steamy scenes, and action you can't go wrong!  However, not for teens or children!  Get yourself submerged into this authors books.  You won't regret it.

Alpha by Jasinda Wilder Book Review

I just can't put into words how enthralling this book was.

What would you do if you mysteriously received a check for $10,000; cash it or tear it up?

This is the decision that Layla had to make.  So what would your decision be?  Welcome to the book ALPHA by Jasinda Wilder.  Yes I know you're interested I can see your gears rolling......

This book was by one of my favorite authors, but I won't let her fool you-it was not in my normal genre.

Alpha made me blush, and made me swoon.  That being said girls, this book isn't for the faint of heart.  It has some steaminess that will make you sweat!  The mysterious benefactor and the beautiful, dependent, stubborn female lead was a perfect match up of characters.  I need me some ROTH!  The storyline is to me a great mix of romance, sex, and adventure.  So again, not for the girls that can't handle a bit of sexual content; to say the least.

To those of you that made it past my first paragraph well you just need to hang on to your drawers, grab your kindle, and order this book.  Indulge in some fun!  Layla's & Roth storyline is amazing.  You will start this book, and not want to put it down.  I sure didn't.  So I recommend if you can get over the sexual content that you grab this book, and read away.  This is not recommended for children or teens.

So girls if you are ready to jump into Alpha click the picture below and get your copy:

You can also pre-order your copy of the 2nd book in the series Beta by clicking the picture below:

Game of Love--The Remingtons by Melissa Foster

Thank you Melissa Foster for writing such a great love story.

To start off this review I want to apologize for taking so long since my last blog post.  Now, on to the good stuff.

The characters within this book series are diverse, and have great depth to them.  In this part of the grand series "Love in Bloom" which has many separate series branches you will meet "The Remingtons".  The main characters of "Game of Love" Ellie & Dex by far are the couple that will just make you want to root for them till the end.  Ellie's background of being tossed around from foster family to foster family, and Dex's past with his dad you just can't help but to want to push them together. The story-line of the first book of "The Remingtons" part of "Love in Bloom" leaves you wanting to find out where the story goes with these two, and the others they relate to within within the book--such as Mitch--the chunky but awesome computer nerd, and Regina the tattoo rebel without a cause chic with a protective heart.

If you have followed my blog for a while you'll know I don't really ever give out to much of the story behind the book.  I prefer that you take the time as I did.  Read because it keeps your brain active, and its a great way to drop the world issues, and just relax.

Melissa Foster is a great author I have loved every book I have read that she has put out.  If I could afford to buy all her books I would.  If your in the mood for romance, and a relaxing read this book is a must.  That being said there is a warning of adult content.  :)  So I would recommend these series for those adults among us.

Happy reading & a blessed day--

Gena

Push And Shove Book #6 of by C.L.Stone Book Review

All I have to say is C.L. Stone has by all means joined my top 10 authors.  In fact she’s pretty much #1 in my list.  The latest book in the “Ghost Bird” series was amazeballs.  Yes, I SAID AMAZEBALLS.  I finished the book at 10:30pm last night.  OMG, then I couldn’t get my brain to slow down to go to sleep.  So that zombie state I am in today is all on her.

If you’ve been following her series so far you know that you have to get this newest edition.  I am definitely not a spoiler so I will not tell you a thing that will spoil the really good stuff.  The guys definitely step it up in “Push & Shove”, and they sure as heck start showing more responsiveness to Sang.  I think I may have fell a little more in love with Sean & Owen aka Dr. Green & Mr. Blackbourne.  Who am I kidding I think I fall in love with each one of them in every book.

I can’t put into words how much I adore the writing style of C.L. Stone, and her book series about “ The Academy”.  This book series is mean for YA & New Adult, and honestly as a 39 year old woman it makes sense in either genre.  There are no sex scenes within the book series as of yet.  Not to say that’s not to happen in future editions of the series.  I can’t wait to see how the books progress through the lives of the boys of “The Academy”, and Sang.

The newest books for “Ghost Bird” & “The Scarab Beetle” are due out in the fall.  I just may have to re-read the series again before then.  Stop rewind.  Yep and do it again.  That’s how much I like this series.

If you haven't already purchased the book you can simply click the picture below to be taken straight to it!!

Happy Reading & Summer love—

How's this smile? Braces update (heavy on the pictures)

Okay y'all do not laugh I am not the cutest thing out there.  I did this fast little picture after cleaning my dirty face for the day.  You ladies out there know that you have to do that to stay young forever right?!?

So I had my first bracket break loose from a tooth this past month.  That was a whole lot of fun!  Let's just say as much as I love to talk that bracket just moved from side to side banging around, and spinning around my wire.  It didn't hurt nearly as bad as I thought it would when I got it adhered back to the tooth the following day, but made eating a blast.

At this time I have decided to hold off on the surgery to fix my jaw alignment.  Due to a miscarriage I had in March which was a miracle & blessing for us after years of trying it was good to know I could become pregnant.  We  are currently working with my obgyn to help with conception, but that is a whole other blog topic.

I am going to post a before smile(not great at smiling), and a current picture.  I tell you this will be an awesome journey for me.

Before Braces were put on.

This is the day I had braces put on.

These two are from today.  I had to do a close up to show how much movement has happened.

But to show it a little better how about a side by side of the two that show my smile---

So there you have it.  In June I am already assured there will be even more teeth movement with a new wire going in.  I have a few years of these to go I believe 2017 is the year that I will last have them on.

So tell me---what do you think?

Pretty smiles & all that Jazz

"Cold Blue" by Gary Neece (Oklahoma Author) Book Review

To start off this book review I would like to thank the author for his time, and for loaning me the books to read for review.  To let you know a bit about the author himself he is a Tulsa PD detective, and his style of writing is pretty darn good.  Gary has stayed in contact with me throughout this whole thing.  :)

The book I read is "Cold Blue" it is the first book in a series based on a Tulsa PD detective named Jonathan Thorpe(I call him by his last name).  The book is addicting!  However it is a real jump out of my normal genre so it took me a bit to get into.  Ok, its not the books fault I had to stop every time something was mentioned about Tulsa, and ask hubby if it was pretty close to truth (haha).

Thorpe is a strong man, and has gone through so much strife as of late.  He lost his wife & daughter to murder, and its somewhat sent him off the deep end or has it??!!??  He takes matters into his own hands to find out who it was that killed his family.  Throughout the book you will read much violence, and the twist & turns will keep you enthralled. It's one of the most thrilling books I have read! So this is not for the faint at heart.   The detail in the book will bring you right into it, and you will see the scene as you read it for sure.  Oh, and when the FBI comes in oh boy oh boy oh boy!!

In closing I will say this is a must read.  Especially for those of you that can handle violence, and crime.   It is followed by the sequel book "Sins of our fathers".  A definite book for the guys for sure!

So check out Gary Neece, and support our Oklahoma authors!!

Thank you so much Gary for the awesome opportunity to read your books & review them.  I can't wait to start "Sins of our Fathers".

If you click the picture below it will take you straight to the book!! :)

Oh my braces!!!

So sorry for such a lull in posting we have been having some things happening in our lives.  I won't be delving into that.  But let me tell you about today.

I went for my first appointment since I had my braces put on in February.  Oh mylanta talk about ouch!

I got a whole new set of wires.  These wires are slightly larger, and stiffer. Yes, they literally popped my doors on my brackets open, removed my old wire, and slid in my new ones.  So yea um to say the mouth is sore is a understatement for sure.

My orthodontist did say my mouth was moving very well.  I have decided that at this time in my life that I won't be doing the surgery to fix my alignment.  Maybe sometime in the future.  He did tell me that my teeth would still turn out straight, but I would still have a slight overjet/overbite.

So that's all at least the teeth aren't so sore that I can't eat!! That's a plus! :)

My grandpa's

You know I have always had a soft spot in my heart for my grandpa's.  Today I seen something that warmed, and saddened me all at the same time.  My mom & grandpa came up to visit. My mom was having to see a surgeon on a surgery she was to possibly be having.

He is extremely close to my mom.  My mom has a dear friend that has cancer.  She spoke with her on the phone today, and heard news that it wasn't good.  It was really upsetting to my mom because not to long ago we lossed a cousin that was very close to us to cancer.  My grandpa seen how upset my mom was, and that she was crying he got up to console her, and was crying also.

This is from a man that while I was growing up was so strong, and taught me to sing the "tomato song".  You know that song right?!?

Tomato's in the morning, Tomato's in the evening & Tomato's at suppertime.  :)

Anyway for me to see this it showed me that strong man, the kind and endearing grandpa showed me how much he loves his daughter.  And, for me I never got to feel those feelings from my dad.  So it just brings tears to my eyes; not only as a grand-daughter but as a daughter that didn't get to feel that kind of fatherly love.

So here's a picture of that great man his first visit to see the "Tulsa Driller"  it was taken yesterday.

I lost my other grandpa when I was a senior in high school.  He was another great man in my life that have taught me lessons, and showed me undying love.  I have 3 others.  My husband, and my brothers.

So my thing to all you folks out there is this:  Tell someone you love them today.

Happy St. Patty's Day with Corned Beef and Cabbage

Well it is St. Paddy's Day and what better than Corned Beef and Cabbage.  If your a fan of Food Network and Guy Fieri than you know how much he loves his corned beef, well I am the same I could eat this just about everyday.  Now there are many ways to make this and I have come to like this way.  I am not one that likes the little spice pack that comes with the corned beef, but for the ones that do add it in to your pot.

Ingredients:
  • 1 package of Corned Beef
  • 6 red potatoes
  • 1 head of green cabbage
  • salt and pepper
  • water

Directions:

Remove the beef from the package and rinse under cold water.(retain spice pack if using)

Place beef in large pot.(add spice pack over top if using)

Cut the potatoes into quarters.

Place the potatoes around the beef.

Put enough water in to just come over the top of the beef.

Quarter you cabbage and then cut into slices.

Place in pot over beef and potatoes.

Salt and Pepper to taste.

Cook on lowest heat for 2 hours, remove beef and slice, returning back to pot to heat back up.

You can either plate this on a flat plate like the beginning picture, or in a bowl like a soup.
I hope you enjoy.

Steak Tips with Peppered Mushroom Gravy

Ok, here it is awesome Beef Tips with Peppered Mushroom Gravy.  I received this recipe from Myrecipes.com in my email, but did some modification to suit my taste.  This turned out great, Gena is not much on brown gravy and mushrooms, but she loved it.  It comes together fairly fast and it doesn't cast to much, with having some of the items on hand the rest was about $15.00 and this will feed a family of 4.

"Saving Forever" by Jasinda Wilder Book Review

As I have mentioned this has got to be the hardest book series I have ever tried to write a review on.  Overall its full of tragedy, drama, sex, but its also full of love, and romance.  So why is it so dang hard for me to articulate what I want to say???

Saving Forever brings Caden, Ever, & Eden together by the end.  It also has a new set of characters that help so that there is family and fun for all.  Carter the new male counterpart brought into the series for Eden is dreamy as ever!!  He is fraught with his own tragedy, and issues.  But you will see that even those are not going to slow the story down!  So many things happen in this book that you will seriously not want to put the book down once you pick it up and start it!

Overall, this whole series is pretty dang good.  I own it, and I will most likely read it again.  I know this isn’t the longest review, but you need to get the series and read it for yourself.  We all know I do not give spoilers, and I try not to delve to far into the books details.  I’m a firm believer that a person needs to read, and if I give you all the details it takes away from the fun of you finding the silver linings in the books.  So go grab it for yourself.  Grab them all!

Now, I need to jump into more of Jasinda’s books!!

Book 2 After Forever by Jasinda Wilder Book Review

I am having trouble writing a review for this series.  I don't know if its the sadness within it, the heartache, or the all out loss I feel while reading the books.  There are things within this series that I can relate to.  I have myself lost a parent when I was in my twenties who also drank.  And, like Caden in book two I have had a grandparent whom has had a stroke.  So yea this book of the series hit hard, and by the end I cried ALOT!

Book two brings in more of Ever's twin sister Eden.  You learn how Caden & Eden comfort each other to try and help each other heal; which may in the long run be a big problem.  I read reviews before starting this book of the series, and a lot of which mentioned cheating.  I half way for seen this just on the ending of book one.  I do not agree with the reviews or comments that I read concerning the thought or actions of cheating being wrong, and somewhat disrespectful.  I also don't agree with those commenters who said they "WOULD NEVER" because well none of us know what we are capable of when we have been strewn through so much loss, bad luck, and all out emotional warfare that Caden or Eden have gone through in such a young life.  That being said I can say that I wouldn't contemplate it, but I can't say that it "WOULD NEVER" happen because I can not for see the future.  HAHA!

Overall this series has definitely see a different side of Jasinda's writing style, and I like it.  You will not want a YA to read this series that is for sure.  You again will need tissues if you are easily known to cry or are a person that wears their emotions like me.  And, if you don't like controversial topics this may not be for you.
